Letter from our leaders

FROM TODAY TOWARDS THE FUTURE

In 2019, ILSI Europe lived through a very exciting period in its more than 30-year history. On the Board of Directors, we understood that ILSI Europe needed to step into a new era for the organisation. We are confident — our future is promising.

The Transformation is a necessary process to project ILSI Europe to the next decade

— Dr Laurent Le Bellego, Chairman

TRANSFORMATION — EMPOWERING OUR CAPACITIES FOR TODAY AND FOR TOMORROW

At the end of 2018, we embarked on a challenging journey that we call “Transformation”. In today’s constantly changing environment, the ability to adapt is the way to move forward. Through the Transformation, we advance towards a better capacity to face current and future challenges and to deliver significant science. We are motivated by our commitment to address impending major public health and sustainability challenges.

TRANSPARENCY — RECOGNISED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION

We strongly believe that society benefits when scientists from different fields work together to agree on priorities for both public and private sectors. Our aim is to make these available to everyone. In 2019, the European institutions recognised our commitment to transparency. After passing the official audit, ILSI Europe joined the Transparency Register of the European Union. ILSI Europe is now listed as an Non-Governmental Organisations section.

We are proud of a collaborative model that preserves the independence necessary to comply with our mission and vision in Europe and globally.

A NEW SCIENTIFIC PORTFOLIO — READY TO FACE KEY CHALLENGES

Excellence and integrity are the primary values of the science we develop. The Scientific Advisory Committee has been empowered towards a more active role, helping to strengthen our scientific portfolio towards facing strategic challenges for today’s way of living. We have moved towards increasingly dynamic and relevant scientific approaches, remodelling the way we identify, select and refine our activities. To this end, we have created the new Sustainability pillar and have been developing timely and relevant activities in this and the Food Safety and Nutrition fields.

The Scientific Advisory Committee empowerment deeply enhances the scientific independency within ILSI Europe

— Prof. Philip Calder, President

THANKS TO ALL WHO MAKE ILSI EUROPE POSSIBLE

We wish to thank our community of scientists driving our Task Forces and Expert Groups, who, year in, year out, share their knowledge and commitment to ILSI Europe’s co-building principles. We strongly acknowledge that we would not be able to complete the new ILSI Europe project without the talent, expertise and willing service of our governing bodies and multi-sectoral membership.

A new era for ILSI Europe came in 2019 with a new vision, new people and new culture. Challenges remain. Nevertheless, we are building the best architecture to succeed.

— Ignacio Garamendi, Executive Director
